In this #LuxeTalentBlog, discover the incredible professional journey of Karen Romero, International recruiter at Luxe Talent. In this exclusive interview, Karen has agreed to share her experience, talk about her beginnings as a recruiter, and share her best tips for starting and thriving in the profession.
How did your journey to becoming a recruiter begin?
It all began when I got an internship in the human resources department of an automotive company.
My initial tasks didn't involve recruiting but rather administrative duties and support in other departments. However, as I immersed myself in the work and absorbed knowledge from my colleagues, my interest in understanding the internal workings of the human resources department grew deeper.
What intrigued me the most was the personnel selection process: from the initial search for candidates to the final interviews. I was amazed by the confidence and assurance my colleagues conveyed during the interviews, as well as their ability to find the precise questions that revealed each candidate's skills and weaknesses.
Over time, as my self-confidence grew, I decided I wanted to fully dedicate myself to this exciting profession. I began asking constant questions, researching, and learning everything I could about the art of recruiting. My determination didn't go unnoticed, and my mentor started allowing me to participate in more significant selection processes.
The opportunity to conduct my interviews finally arrived. Although I must confess the nerves were on edge, I plunged right in. Despite the initial setbacks, I persevered, and over time, I improved.
How did you know you wanted to be a recruiter?
I discovered that my passion was discovering the potential of every individual I met, analysing the why behind each question, and above all, their response.
Understanding a person's concerns, vision, and viewpoints, connecting with them on a more human level. I loved finding the perfect match between candidate and client, and discovering what they could bring to each other.
Today, years after that uncertain beginning, I continue to learn and grow in this profession that I love so much. Every day I feel grateful for the opportunity I was given to start this rewarding career.
What does it take to be an excellent recruiter?
Empathy is the cornerstone.
Treating candidates with closeness and understanding throughout the process allows them to show their best selves and significantly increases the chances of finding the ideal candidate. Additionally, transparency is key. Providing constant feedback and keeping the candidate informed about the process strengthens mutual trust and demonstrates professionalism.
What skills are necessary?
Last but not least, interpersonal skills are essential.
Identifying candidates' qualities beyond the professional realm allows us to understand if they will fit not only in the role but also in the company's culture and work team. In summary, being a successful recruiter involves much more than just assessing technical skills; it's about connecting with people and building solid, lasting relationships.
